First woman president of Finland, Tarja Halonen, is re-elected to second 6-year term - January 29, 2006 - In a run-off election on Sunday, January 29, 2006, Tarja Halonen was re-elected to a second and final 6-year term as President of Finland.  She was re-elected with nearly 52% of the vote.  In 1974, she was appointed parliamentary secretary to the Prime Minister.  She was elected to Parliament in 1979 and served five terms.  In 1999, as Foreign Minister of Finland, she was also President of the European Union.  She was first elected President of Finland in 2000.
