| Sue Bell Cobb becomes the first female Chief Justice on the Alabama Supreme Court - January 16, 2007 - Sue Bell Cobb, a Democrat, was elected Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court in the general election in November. She becomes the seventeenth woman currently serving as Chief Justice on a state's highest court. Although 39 states have some form of election for judges, Alabama is one of the few states which has partisan elections.
