Number of Women in the US Senate
Thirty-eight women from twenty-three states have been US Senators, beginning with Rebecca Latimer Felton, who was appointed in1922 to serve one day in the US Senate. Of the thirty-eight women, only twenty-four women from eighteen states were elected to serve a full-term; the other fourteen women senators were appointed to complete the term of another senator and were not subsequently elected to a full-term. Until 1992, no more than two women had ever been elected to serve in the US Senate at the same time.
